fun, quick moving gameOct 30, 2009 Gallop Home has been a hit with our horse-obsessed 8-yr-old son. The game play is simple and straightforward. Pick one of four horses, each of which has different skills and then move around the board collecting points for landing on skill squares. For example, if you're a thoroughbred and land on racing, you'll get 50 points, land on dressage or trick riding and you'll still get points but not as many. Along with the skill spots you can land on the Vet or Blacksmith squares for 5 points for taking good care of your horse, Bonus spots which give you extra points in your various skills, Barn squares where you lose a turn for not taking care of your horse, and Pick a Card Squares. The cards variously give you points, move you forward or back to other squares, make you lose a turn, and so on. The game moves along pretty quickly, taking about 15-20 minutes depending on rolls and number of players. Land on a Pleasure square and you can cut some serious travel time by taking short-cut bridges. One of the nice touches is that being the first to finish, while giving you some big points, doesn't necessarily mean you win as that is determined by total points. It's a good method as it keeps younger kids in the game even if they fall way behind on the path.
This isn't an educational game; don't expect to pick up a lot of horse learning beyond a few things such as certain horse breeds are good at dressage and others at racing. But it doesn't present itself as such. It's simple, clear, keeps you in the game with the point system and the moving back and forth due to card play, and passes the "does my kid want to play it repeatedly" test. Recommended for ages 6-12 I'd say.
A great board game about horsesJul 08, 2009 This is a very well constructed board game that has beautiful horse game pieces. I bought this for my 7 year old granddaughter and we've played it several times already. It is an enjoyable game that any age can enjoy and it is a great family activity.
So / So game playApr 01, 2008 The game mechanics are sort of hokey. By that, I mean there's really nothing to it more than marking off items on a checklist. I re-read the instructions twice to make sure that was really all there was to it. Sure, you absorb a little horse knowledge out of it, but the learning isn't really important to the strategy - more important is landing on the right squares and the horse you start out with. Think horse monopoly.
While it is very well made, it was boring (sorry, but nobody in our family likes it - even our horse obsessed daughter). Get Herd Your Horses above this. It is VERY fun and what you learn from it is actually unique among horse games (wild horse habits).

Great GameJan 11, 2006 My daughter got this game for Christmas and we all love it. It is a fun, educational game that the whole family enjoys! My daugther is 6 and my son is 9 and they both enjoy it! Highly recommended.

Gallop Home with this game under your armDec 03, 2005 I bought this game about this time a year ago for my daughter who is 9. It was a quick "That's nice" and then on to the other presents; but the two of us set down and started playing Gallop Home, it quickly became her favorite game. I know a little about horses and the various breeds and what those breeds are primarily focused on doing. I never expected this game to be educational in that way. My daughter who loves this game had no background at all in horses, but now she understands the various uses for the Arabian or the Thoroughbred and she knows as she works her way around the board which spaces are the best to land for that particular breed she is playing during the game. Neither of us really care who wins(I guess you can tell she beats me most of the time); but it's fun and I get a real thrill everytime she asks me to play it with her . . . OK . . . fast forward a year . . . she is still wanting to play it every day and I'll take that over TV anytime. BUY THIS GAME - - - play it a couple times and once you get a feel for it, you and the kids will be hooked.
